Pre-Admission and Admission Processes

If you are thinking about residential care and Kate Sheppard is of interest there are a number of prerequisits to admission:

Needs Assessment

Going into residential care you should begin by having a Needs Assessment. The assessment can be arranged through your GP, social worker or through public hospital.

This assessment will help with making the critical decision as to what level of care, if any, you require and provide you with information on accessing public funding of residential care. A needs assessor can visit you at home or in hospital, to talk with you about the tasks you find difficult and the kinds of services that you may require. Further information on the needs assessment process is available on the following link: National listing of Needs Assessment and Service Co-ordination agencies.

Residential Subsidy

In making your decision about care, you may be concerned how much it will cost to stay in long term care, hospital or rest home.

If you are assessed as eligible for a residential care subsidy and meet the asset threshold, you may be liable to pay your NZ superannuation and any other income contribution to us as set by Work and Income (comfort funding exception).

If you do not meet the asset threshold and require hospital level care, you will be required to pay the “maximum contribution” (the latest nationally agreed price for contracted care services listed on the Ministry of Health Website), to meet the funding shortfall for higher care costs. A Top Up subsidy will be paid by the MOH to the care provider. You will continue to receive your NZ Super.

If you do not meet the asset threshold and you require rest home level care you will pay full weekly fees. We will discuss these should you make an enquiry.

Additional Services Fees

Because we offer a premium facility, although many rooms are free of additional charges, we charge an additional weekly fee of between $20 and $70 (please enquire for current charges) for our large and deluxe rooms.

Viewing our Facilities

Picture_111Once you know that you require care, we recommend you contact Kate Sheppard. Our Clinical Nurse Manager, Shirley McKenzie or if outside normal hours any of our nursing staff will be happy to show you around our caring facility. An information pack will be supplied on initial visit or sent on request.

Kate Sheppard is popular, so we frequently have a waiting list. However we do our best to provide you with the services you will need in the timeframe you need it. If we cannot provide you with a bed immediately, once on the waiting list, we will call you to advise when a bed has become available.

Pre Admission Arrangements to Kate Sheppard

On admission to Kate Sheppard you or your family will be provided with a Admission Agreement and a range of other documents outlining our obligations to you and yours to us. These are generally signed prior to admission.  Other things to consider are whether you have a Power of Attorney and Advance Directives on your care.
